Sonica Glasgow 2019
21 October – 15 November 2019
Volunteer for Cryptic’s award-winning festival of live audio-visual performances and installations.
Our award-winning biennial festival, Sonica, brings a pioneering programme of world-class visual sonic arts to Glasgow this autumn. 2019 will showcase more Scottish talent than ever before, as well as including a host of exceptional international artists from Argentina, Belgium, Canada, Catalonia, France, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Norway, Quebec, Slovenia and Sweden.
We are looking for reliable and enthusiastic volunteers who are keen to work alongside the Cryptic team to help us deliver this unique Festival.
It is important to us that all our volunteers gain skills and experiences that will be useful to them in the future, get to know Cryptic and the artists we work with and have an enjoyable and memorable experience. We encourage applications from individuals with a diverse range of experiences. However, there are some qualities we would like all volunteers to have:
- Enthusiastic, reliable and flexible;
- Friendly personality with good communication skills and initiative;
- An interest in contemporary culture;
- Able to commit to allotted shifts;
- At least 18 years of age.
Who are we looking for?
We are looking for volunteers to assist with front of house, customer service, artist and delegate registration and technical assistance. These roles will provide volunteers with experience in box office, customer care, invigilation, audience evaluation and technical skills, as well as an overview of how a large-scale festival is planned, run and managed.
Front of House:
We are looking for enthusiastic people with good communication skills to welcome and engage audiences. This customer facing role will provide volunteers with experience in box office delivery and audience evaluation, including assistance with audience engagement and invigilating installations during the day, evenings and weekends. An interest or knowledge of contemporary art and performance is desirable.
Delegate & Artist Registration & Customer Information Teams:
Volunteers will be involved in the onsite registration of artists and delegates from the cultural sector as well as assisting us in the handling of customer enquiries. You will greet artists and delegates, checknames against online registrations, and the print and distribution of delegate passes and information packs. You will also be the first point of contact for audiences. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are required.
Venue Technical Assistants:
Volunteers for these roles should have some technical knowledge of how an art installation works or experience in delivering live multi-media events. You will be assigned a role depending on your interests and experience. Shifts are dictated by installation and performance schedules and load in/out timings. This role will provide volunteers with general technical experience across the Sonica programme.
For Sonica Glasgow 2019, a team of volunteers will work closely with artists on the preparation and delivery of their work in the lead up to the festival. This is an invaluable opportunity for a visual artist or arts student to work alongside and learn directly from experienced artists. Volunteers in this team should have hands-on exhibition experience.
In the run up to and during the festival, volunteers will be fully supported by the Cryptic team, have a dedicated point of contact and given clear guidance on their role. A presentation detailing the work will be given to equip you with sufficient knowledge before you start.
These roles are voluntary, but the following benefits are available:
- We will be flexible about your working arrangements on the understanding that you are providing your time for free and may have other work or study commitments;
- We will work with you to offer a challenging, useful experience that helps develop your skills;
- We will reimburse reasonable Glasgow based travel and out of pocket expenses as agreed in advance;
- We will provide tickets to attend Sonica performances and events. This is to be agreed in advance and is dependent on availability;
- We will provide training;
- We can give you a reference if your work is of a high quality and you are reliable;
- You will join a collective of talented, exciting people with which to make friends and contacts.
If you are interested, please send your CV and a short covering letter to Jennifer Clews at firstname.lastname@example.org. Your letter should include:
- Your previous experience;
