Mark Vernon’s longstanding obsession with taping has seen him accumulate a vast archive of field recordings, home media and found cassettes. The fact that he does not know why these recordings were made, or the identities of those who made them, is all part of the appeal. In The Past Imperfect, Vernon presents an immersive tour through his audiological archives: forgotten voices meld with audio of unknown places and even more mysterious sounds. The result, played out on quadrophonic speakers, generates nostalgia for a time we cannot possibly have known.
