The half-dozen vocalists of experimental drone choir NYX build exquisitely emotive songs that sound like they have always existed, or perhaps always will. Led by music director Sian O’Gorman and creative producer Philippa Neels, the collective draw from sacred music, opera, sound design and experimental electronics to challenge preconceptions about what a traditional women’s choir looks like. From the simplest of refrains – a lone piano line or low murmur of synths – their songs build into towers of ethereal sound. Somatic movements complement these transcendent, muscular choral works.
