Musician, producer and artist Lomond Campbell makes one-of-a-kind musical instruments. His new invention, the muonophone – a beautifully retrofuturist device of walnut panels, chunky metal knobs and filament bulbs – detects subatomic particles created when cosmic radiation interacts with particles in the atmosphere. This phenomenon which normally goes unnoticed, but here generates audiovisual signals to which Campbell has programmed his device to improvise a musical response. MŮO translates the ancient energy of the cosmos into a deep listening environment, in a stunning duet between circuitry and stardust.
