Inspired by classics of Japanese art and literature and by artist Boris Labbé’s travels in Japan, Ito Meikyū – the title translates as ‘thread labyrinth’ – is an ever-changing digital fresco. Wearing a VR headset, the viewer enters a maze-like void filled with intricately animated animals, calligraphy, people and patterns, shimmering in a state of constant transformation. On their self-guided journey of discovery through Labbe’s world, the viewer sees that however anarchic these scenes may seem, one constant thread links them all together – symbolising the real-life connections that unite us in all our differences.
