A fixture of mediaeval and Renaissance times, the imagery of Mundus Inversus (world turned upside-down) reverses the customary power structures: masters defer to their servants, noblemen to the lowborn, and vicars to choirboys. AES+F’s thoughtful modern take on the tradition is a sequence of stately video works set to an uncanny classical soundtrack. As pigs slaughter butchers, protesters embrace riot police, and the poor offer alms to the rich, these absurd and grotesque scenes prompt us to ask why the balance of power seems to have shifted so little since the Middle Ages.
